WHY AN ESSENCE — AND WHY THIS ONE
Essences are the first layer of moisture after cleansing — lighter than a serum, faster-absorbing than a toner, and specifically designed to prepare skin to receive treatments. When applied to slightly damp skin, they help serums absorb more evenly, reduce the reactive sting of actives, and give dehydrated skin the water it needs before anything else asks more of it.
What makes this one different is what's in it.
I chose multi-weight hyaluronic acid — not the single molecular weight found in most HA products. Multiple molecular weights means hydration reaches different depths of the skin simultaneously: the surface layers get immediate comfort, and deeper layers get sustained moisture that lasts. No heaviness. No tackiness. No residue.
I also included Thanakha extract — a botanical from the Thanakha tree that has been used for centuries in traditional Southeast Asian skincare to calm, cool, and support reactive skin. It's one of those genuinely unusual ingredients that earns its place not because it's trending, but because it works. You almost never find it in Western skincare, and I'm glad I found it.

Apply generously to clean skin immediately after cleansing. Press gently into skin — don't rub. Follow with your serums while skin is still slightly damp. The slight dampness is what helps everything that follows absorb more completely.

What's the difference between this and the Essential Hydration Serum? Both support hydration, but they work at different points in your routine and serve different purposes. This essence is your very first step after cleansing — it primes bare, post-cleanse skin and creates the foundation everything else builds on. The Essential Hydration Serum goes after this, adding a targeted layer of water-binding hydration and peptide support. Many customers use both; others find this essence alone gives their skin everything it needs between cleansing and treatment.
Will it break me out? I formulated this specifically for acne-prone skin — no pore-clogging residue, no fragrance, no film-forming agents that congest pores. It's intentionally lightweight so it supports your skin without the heaviness that triggers breakouts.
Can I use it if I'm on tretinoin or prescription retinoids? Yes — and based on customer experience, it may actually help. Rachael's review above mentions it "takes the sting out of tretinoin." The barrier support from Panthenol and the calming properties of Thanakha help skin tolerate prescription actives more comfortably. If you're struggling with irritation from a prescription routine, this is often one of the first things I'd suggest adding.
